For
several years now we have been work in close collaboration
with the Seeing-Eye Dog School of Paris directed by Mr Roméro.
Eight
seeing-eye dogs from our kennel have already been handed
over to their blind owners.
Others,
from Speed’s next litter, will soon be joining their
“Puppy Raisers”.

The school’s
site:
http://www.chien-guide-paris.asso.fr/
A very well done site
with a lot of information about the education and work of
seeing-eye dogs.
Puppies bought at the age of 2 months are
given to “Puppy Raisers” who take responsibility
for raising and educating the young dog. The work done by
each family is closely supervised by a trainer who makes
certain the puppy is evolving in the right manner. Both
the sight and hips(dysplasia) of the young dogs are tested
before they can begin their formal training. Around 12 months
of age the dog enters school where the handlers will teach
him the difficult job of being a seeing-eye dog. Once fully
trained their blind owners, their hand on the harness, will
be able to safely move around outdoors. The dog will be
able to stop his owner before a danger or simply (easier
said than done!) any obstacle which might trip him up. In
this manner the dog will guide his owner by choosing the
safest path, signaling a sidewalk, a hole, a mail box, the
entrance to a store or a bus…
The White Shepherd, which is so attached and devoted to
his owner, makes for a wonderful Seeing-Eye dog. He can
guide his owner hours on end constantly watching over him
on the lookout for ways he can be of use.

Becky future Seeing-Eye Dog

Becky
des Gardiens du Pacte was ambassador of the
ECGA of Paris during the Animal Expo exhibit
which was held at the Parc Floral de Vincennes
on September 22nd and 23rd.
This
young 10 month old dog will start her training
in the next few days; rather younger than usual
but according to her handlers she is “extraordinary”.
She
has passed all the necessary health and personality
tests, as well as Bounty, Christal and Baila
des Gardiens du Pacte.
Each has already been assigned to a blind owner
and will be handed over at the end of their
training period.
Other puppies from our kennel are still with
their “Puppy Raiser” families. We
wish them all a long and successful career as
seeing-eye dogs.
